The Ion Beam fires a red, straight-line, long-range laser. This weapon can be fired continuously by holding the button down. It can be fired in all 8 directions. It looks a lot like the beam weapon fired from a Laser Urchin.

When Trace aims upwards and fires the Ion Beam while walking, he can easily lure out and kill flying enemies that are off screen.

Location
The Ion Beam can be found in the middle portion of Kur, in the large open area just to the left of the room where you find the Remote Drone. Trace must use the Red Coat to access it.

Itshelispark: /* Description */ tail armor

Description
Xedur Hul is the final Variant to appear in Axiom Verge. It is also the final boss found in Mar-Uru before encountering Athetos. Due to its location and late appearance in the game, Xedur Hul is presumed to be one of the two "new" Variants spoken of in the Note titled "Trace".

It has a similar appearance to that of Xedur, but its body and armor have a more red-purple-ish hue, its tail is now covered by armor, and it fires purple projectiles instead of red.

Interestingly, Xedur Hul is the only boss battle in the game that does not trap Trace in the room with a laser wall. The other side of the room will be completely open. In fact, Trace remarks this in a cutscene when he enters the room, hinting to the player that the battle can be skipped by passing the Variant and walking through the door on the far side of the room. Doing so will also give the player the Achievement "Mercy" upon the game's completion.

Battle
Xedur Hul is far more aggressive than its counterpart Xedur. This is likely the inspiration for the "Hul" part of its name. Xedur Hul will attack much more rapidly and will direct all of its shots at Trace. Additionally, there are no platforms in the room to use as cover, leaving Trace exposed to all of its attacks.

Strategies
* Run! This boss can be skipped by exiting the room through the door to the far left. This is the easiest way to get past this boss.
* Fight! If you choose to fight this boss, you will need to move quickly. You can use the Red Coat to teleport back and forth across the room as you fight, dodging Xedur Hul's attacks. The Lightning Gun will be surprisingly innefective as it tends to strike the armor instead of the exposed flesh. Use the Kilver, FlameThrower, or whichever direct line-of-fire weapon you are most comfortable with to fire diagonally upward at Xedur Hul's weak spot. You can also use the Red Coat’s damaging trail to damage the boss as you dodge his attacks.

Etymology
* In the Sumerian language, The word "Hul" means "evil", "vicious", or "to detest".

The name could also be a reference to the ancient city Uruk, which was ruled by the legendary king Gilgamesh.
Description
Xedur is a modified clone of Athetos and the game's first boss. It has a bulky brown upper body, which is surrounded by a white metal armor. Xedur's grotesque tail protrudes from under its body and can drop small red bombs that explode after a set delay. If you look closely, in the center of that ring of white armor on the front, you can see its face.

Xedur appears in one of the three Journal Pages.

Battle
Xedur attacks Trace in a predictable pattern, firing red orbs of energy from its outer shell, then dropping bombs, and then repeating this cycle. Attacking the creature from the back is futile as the Axiom Disruptor will not penetrate its armor. Only its exposed flesh is vulnerable.

After defeating Xedur, Trace will be rewarded with the Laser Drill.

Strategies
There are two blocks in the middle of the room that can be used as cover throughout the fight. The player will need to dodge Xedur's volleys of red energy orbs while firing upward or diagonally whenever possible. When Xedur moves to one side of the room, its very effective to go to the opposite side and fire diagonally at him.

Once Xedur begins dropping bombs, it's best to focus on the most recent bomb explosion and reposition to that location, as its unlikely that Xedur will drop another bomb in the same spot. It's important to note that the bombs themselves will not harm Trace and, since they are on a timer, you can briefly walk over them when they land without taking damage.
Encounter
Trace first attempts to reason with Telal, asking "can we just talk it out?" But Telal is intent to kill the "demon" that it sees before it.

Throughout the fight, Telal will alternate between firing small red spheres from weapons mounted on its upper body, to firing large red laser shots from its main canon, which it carries with its arms.

Telal is an incredibly massive creature and the weight of its armor and main canon means it is not very mobile. The creature walks slowly with halting steps and cannot turn around in its own chamber. This means that if Trace is able to get behind Telal during the fight, it is unable to attack him.

Strategies
Telal's weakpoint is the group of yellow bulbous sacs protruding from its back. There are essentially only two approaches to this battle.

Frontal Assault
When you enter the room, you'll notice two red bubble pillars and a floating platform just beyond that (at the bottom of the first pink grid-like structure in the background). Your goal is to stay on that floating platform for this entire fight.

When Telal fires the small red laser balls at you, you'll want to jump over the low ones and duck under the high ones. As you jump into the air, you can take shots at his weakpoint. Sometimes the high shots will appear to hit Trace directly in the face, but as long as you're ducking, the hit should not register. Alternatively, you can also jump over the high shots, depending on what you're comfortable with.

When Telal pauses to fire his main cannon, the three large laser shots will pass harmlessly under you. This is your opportunity to unload. If for some reason, you get knocked off the platform, use the red bubbles to jump back up as quickly as possible. You don't want to be caught below.

Telal will begin to fire progressively faster throughout the fight. Just stay calm and time your jumps & ducks, and get in as many hits on his weakpoint as you can.

Backstabber
This method is much easier, but requires that you have full or nearly full health at the start of the battle. You can use the save room or kill the Blue Nautilus on the path to the boss fight if you need health.

Upon entering the room, immediately go to the right straight through Telal. You'll probably take two hits, but the invulnerability period should ensure you make it behind him.

Telal is such a hulking creature that he is unable to turn around, meaning once you're behind him, you have complete freedom to take him down. Shoot diagonally upward at his back and make sure you keep your distance when he moves so that you don't touch him again. He will eventually back up far enough that you'll need to jump onto the small ledge where the laser gate is, but you should have no trouble finishing him off after that.
Description
Gir-Tab is a biomechanoid Variant of Athetos and the game's 4th sequential boss. Its appearance is that of a large, scorpion-like creature with a flamethrower for a tail, a laser canon replacing each claw, and a third canon on its back.

Athetos created Gir-Tab by first cloning himself with one of Sudra's Rebirth Chambers, and then making biomechanoid modifications to the clone.

Gir-Tab is the most verbally capable Variant, and is notable for having helped Athetos decipher the Sudran language for use with the Passcode Tool.

Battle
Trace confronts Gir-Tab in the middle-right portion of Kur.

Gir-Tab will fire volleys of energy projectiles from its claw and back canons. From time-to-time, it will also leap at the player, getting in range to attack with its flamethrower tail. Gir-Tab's weak underbelly should be the primary target for Trace. While his cyclops eye is also a weak-point, Gir-Tab keeps it closed and invulnerable most of the time.

After defeating Gir-Tab, the player will be able to enter the next room containing Katrahaska and will also be able to turn on the Repair Drones.

Strategies
Gir-Tab is perhaps the most tedious boss fight in Axiom Verge, due to the fact that you have to play defense much more than you can play offense. Learn Gir-Tab's attack patterns, and he becomes much simpler. However keep pace because he will speed up his attacks when near death.
* The most straightforward strategy to this battle is to crouch low and use either the Nova or Voranj to hit Gir-Tab's underbelly. Watch for Gir-Tab to get low to the ground and use short hops to jump over his low shots. Pay attention to the height of the oncoming fire because he will sometimes switch it up with a third shot at medium level. There's not much to say about his flamethrower attack. Keep your distance and wait it to end. Repeat, and repeat, and repeat and he will eventually go down.
* The above strategy can also be done with the Hypo-Atomizer. However, the weapon is fairly unreliable because it must align perfectly with a small part of Gir-Tab's underbelly in order to hit. A way of bypassing this problem is to start crouching far away from Gir-Tab and slowly moving toward it while crouching. The perpendicular shots will eventually start to hit the weak point, forcing the boss to fall back a little and thus keeping him aligned with the shots. That technique also gives you space to work with, which is useful when dodging series of shots.
* Another strategy is to start with the above and, if you're feeling confident, go on a suicide attack to hit Gir-Tab's underbelly with powerful blasts from the Kilver. If you have weakened him enough, you will be able to finish him off.
* Similar to the above strategy, you can start off by diving Gir-Tab with the Kilver or Laser Drill. Take off a major chunk of his HP and quickly move to the right side of the room to finish him with the "straightforward" strategy above.
About the Note
This is a purple note, and written in English by (an) Athetos.

Two clones of Athetos, A3 and A9, have an interaction. A3 itself as Telal, the second Variant that Trace fights. A9's personal identity as an Athetos clone is not mentioned, but it behaves like a non-genetically modified clone. A9 tries to "talk it out" with Telal in a similar manner that Trace has. Despite its decision to attack A9 prior to the conversation, Telal proves itself to be more verbally capable than other Variants are.

"UDUG HUL" is the title of a Sumerian canon about exorcising evil spirits. Perhaps Telal uses this phrase to communicate that its goal is to exorcise the demons that it has seen around itself.

This is Note 16.

Location
The Note titled "Transcription" can be found on the far left side of Absu, at the bottom of the furthest-left vertical shaft in an area only accessible with the Remote Drone. The Remote drone must drill and enter a secret path beside a skeleton.
A9: What happened to Athetos?

A3: I AM ATHETOS

A9: But you just said you are "Telal"?

A3: (No response)

A9: How can you be Athetos if you are Telal?

A3: ATHETOS

A9: Why did you attack me?

A3: (No response)

A9: Do you remember attacking me?

A3: TELAL ATTACK ... DEMON

About the Note
This is a purple note, and written in English by (an) Athetos.

Two Variants, A3 and A9, have an interaction. A3 identifies itself as Telal, the second Variant that Trace fights. A9's personal identity as a Variant is not mentioned. A9 tries to "talk it out" with Telal in a similar manner that Trace has. Despite its decision to attack A9 prior to the conversation, Telal appears to be more verbally capable than other Variants are.

This is Note 16.

Location
The Note titled "Transcription" can be found on the far left side of Absu, at the bottom of the furthest-left vertical shaft in an area only accessible with the Remote Drone. The Remote drone must drill and enter a secret path beside a skeleton.

Prerequisites
* Remote Drone
